Fontana Dam, built in the early 1940’s is the highest dam east of the Rockies and is definitely a site to behold! Lake Fontana, bordering the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offers 240 miles of shoreline and well known with fishing enthusiasts, boaters & swimmers. Also, of special note, areas of Lake Fontana and the town of Robbinsville were featured in the 1994 filming of the major motion picture ‘Nell’ starring Jodie Foster, Liam Neeson & Natasha Richardson. A scene in the filming of the movie ‘The Fugitive’ starring Harrison Ford was filmed at the Cheoah Dam on Hwy. 129, near The Tail of the Dragon and just minutes away from Lakefront Cottage on Lake Santeetlah.

You won’t have far to go to find creeks, trout streams, hiking trails, waterfalls, wildflowers, mountain biking, horseback riding and of course, whitewater activities on the Nantahala River or the Cheoah River, a class III – IV+ river for the experienced rafter and kayaker during special water release dates.

Tubing on Deep Creek in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is short drive away and makes for a fun filled day too! Rentals for tubes are located just before entering the Park and the rentals are for a full day at a very nominal price. There’s also picnic tables and a hiking trail to a waterfall at Deep Creek just outside the town of Bryson City.

Many local artisans in this mountain region welcome you to their studios and it’s a great way to see the back roads and countryside at the same time!

Come explore and enjoy our natural wonders, scenic beauty and great outdoor adventures – we’re the less crowded side of the Smokies!
