SUMMARY:Dancing on the Square with Bill Pruett
DESCRIPTION:Introducing Bill Pruett –\nBanjo player Bill Pruett is a living legend — he’s been playing guitar and banjo when he was just six or seven years old\, growing up in the Balsam Gap area near Waynesville. As a teenager Bill sometimes accompanied the legendary Samantha Bumgarner at the courthouse in Sylva — she affectionately called him “Cottontop.” \nBill’s bluegrass career includes a stint with Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys\, the band that gave bluegrass music its very name. He has also shared the stage with other bluegrass royalty — Mac Wiseman\, Chubby Wise\, Josh Graves\, and Joe Stuart among them. He has always enjoyed picking for the joy of it but he managed to pick up a Florida State Banjo Championship along the way\, anyway. \nBill loves the older mountain tunes including old-time\, Scottish\, and Irish music. He doesn’t plan to retire unless his mind or fingers quit first! \nWhat Is Dancing on the Square?\nBring your dancing shoes and get ready to have fun! In Robbinsville\, NC we have a long standing tradition of dancing in the streets — join us every Friday night from May through August for a live band performing dance music. \n\n \nPhoto Credit: Darryl Cannon \n\nThis Is A Rain Or Shine Event\nIn case of rain dance will be in Graham County Community Building located at 196 Knight Street Robbinsville\, NC

SUMMARY:Dancing on the Square with Darren Nicholson & The Shedhouse Trio
DESCRIPTION:A Special America 250th Dancing on the Square Celebration with Darren Nicholson & The Shedhouse Trio Featuring a Live Square Dance Caller – Join us for an authentic mountain dance night with Darren Nicholson and the Shedhouse Trio\, celebrating America’s 250th birthday with one of the oldest living traditions in the Country. \nSquare dancing is older than America itself. Like much of Southern Appalachian culture it grew out of a mix of cultures — English country dances\, French quadrilles\, and Scottish and Irish reels that settlers brought to these mountain where it was woven into something distinctly and beautifully American. This is the dance form that brought America together as neighbors and communities for generations — what better way to celebrate than with Dancing on the Square? \nNever square danced before? Perfect — this is a teaching event. You don’t need to know a sing step to come out and join in. Darren’s live caller will walk dancers of every age and experience level through every figure\, every swing\, and do-si-do. If you can walk\, you can square dance. \nAbout Darren Nicholson — Darren Nicholson is one of North Carolina’s most celebrated mandolin players. A Haywood County native and Grammy nominee\, he is the front man for the Darren Nicholson Band and a founding member of the award-winning bluegrass quintet\, Balsam Range. Darren has been recognized with numerous awards and is event a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine but all of that is shadowed when he’s standing in front of a crowd. He likes nothing more than bringing people together to enjoy our mountain music and have a good time.

SUMMARY:An Appalachian Evening Summer Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:An Appalachian Evening with Kruger Brothers \nBorn and raised in Europe\, brothers Jens and Uwe Kruger started singing and playing instruments at a very young age. Growing up in a family where music was an important part of life\, they were exposed to a wide diversity of musical influences. The brothers were performing regularly by the time they were eleven and twelve years old\, and they began their professional career in 1979. Jens’ and Uwe’s first public performances were as a duo\, and in just a few years they were busking on the streets of cities throughout eastern and western Europe. CBS Records contracted with Jens and Uwe when Jens was just seventeen years old\, and shortly thereafter\, the Krugers hosted a radio show on SRG SSR\, the Swiss Public broadcast group. Several years later\, the brothers teamed up with bass player Joel Landsberg\, a native of New York City who also had a very extensive musical upbringing in classical and jazz music (studying with jazz great Milt Hinton)\, thus forming a trio that has been playing professionally together since 1995. \n
