Dancing on the Square with Bill Pruett

*** Guest Banjo Player TBD ***

Introducing Bill Pruett –

Banjo player Bill Pruett was a living legend — he’s been playing guitar and banjo when he was just six or seven years old, growing up in the Balsam Gap area near Waynesville. As a teenager Bill sometimes accompanied the legendary Samantha Bumgarner at the courthouse in Sylva — she affectionately called him “Cottontop.”

Bill’s bluegrass career included a stint with Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys, the band that gave bluegrass music its very name. He has also shared the stage with other bluegrass royalty — Mac Wiseman, Chubby Wise, Josh Graves, and Joe Stuart among them. He always enjoyed picking for the joy of it but managed to pick up a Florida State Banjo Championship along the way, anyway.

Bill loved the older mountain tunes including old-time, Scottish, and Irish music. He always joked that he didn’t plan to retire unless his mind or fingers quit first — he did not retire but will surely be missed!
