Travel Advisory for Monday, Aug 31 through Sept 25, 2026 —
Fontana Dam lane closure. NC 28 remains open but motorists and pedestrians should exercise caution and plan for delays when crossing Fontana Dam.
Advisory Status: Active | Start: Aug. 31, 2026 | Expected End: Sept 25, 2026
The Tennessee Valley Authority has temporarily closed one lane of the two-lane roadway across Fontana Dam – North Carolina Highway 28 to conduct concrete maintenance work. The lane closure will be in effect for approximately four weeks beginning Monday, Aug. 31, 2026.
Can you still drive across the dam?
Yes. NC 28 remains open but traffic will be reduced to a single lane, managed by portable traffic control signals.
Can you still walk across the dam?
Yes. Pedestrians can still walk across the dam. This route is a part of the Appalachian Trail and we are entering the bubble for south-bound through hikers so expect increased pedestrian traffic.
How long are the delays last?
Wait times will vary with traffic volume and the work crew schedule. This area receives more traffic in the afternoons and on the weekends.
When will the work be finished?
Project completion is tentatively set for Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, but that schedule is subject to change pending weather and other factors.
